Matt’s pathway to independence
Matt’s journey began at Rochester House, a 10-bedroom residential care home in Kent, in 2003.
Matt developed some valuable living skills and although he was gaining in confidence, he found it difficult living with so many other people which added to his anxieties.
After discussions with the staff team at Rochester and his Care Manager, a one bedroom flat was located in the area in which Matt wanted to live. He moved in on December 2005 with our continued support.
Matt is much happier living independently and has established a wide circle of friends both through The Regard Partnership and through his local community Gateway club.
“I have gained a lot of independence since living on my own with the support of the staff. They assist me with budget setting, menu planning, cooking and emotional support when I require it.” Matt
Matt now has much greater confidence in many daily living skills, particularly using public transport independently. Since being in the flat, Matt has met a girlfriend and they now have a baby boy. Matt is currently looking for some part-time employment assisted by his support networks.
Eileen Brum, Placements Manager at The Regard Partnership, adds, “Matt’s journey highlights what can be achieved in a relatively short time. Positive working partnerships with him, his Care Manager, the team at his residential home, our supported living team, the Housing Association and his local community have combined to provide a bright future for Matt and his family.”
Beverley’s pathway to independence
Bev’s journey began a decade ago at Berkeley House, a 19-bedroom residential care home in Kent. In 1998, The Regard Partnership’s first supported living service, at Canterbury Road in Sittingbourne, was opened and Beverley was the first to move in.
With continued support from our staff team in tune with her person-centred plan, Beverley made great progress in all aspects of her daily living skills. Beverley also gained an NVQ2 in Social Care which led to her gaining part-time employment in a care home for the elderly.
“I am so proud of Beverley and everything she has achieved. She has worked so hard to complete her NVQ and it has brought about remarkable changes in her confidence.
The Beverley I know now is a transformation from the Beverley I met 11 years ago.”
Carol Gribbin, Dom Care Manager, East Kent
In 2003, Beverley gained greater independence by moving into a nearby supported living service. With a gradual reduction in support hours, Beverley continued to thrive in her self-contained environment and three years on, in 2006, she moved into her own flat. She now receives only two hours support a week. Beverley is still working in the care home and now also contributes on a voluntary basis at a local charity shop.
