Wychbury House School is an established and successful 52 week residential school, also offering respite and emergency placements. It is registered with the DFES for nine pupils aged 9-18 years both male and female and includes two independent living placements. As a service Wychbury House specialises in supporting and enabling young people who may experience Emotional Behavioural and Learning Difficulties. The team at Wychbury work to support young people plan for their futures, with the emphasis on building confidence, decision making and positive risk taking.
Specialist Expertise
Support and Education staff work together in partnership to gain the young person’s confidence, supporting them as individuals in their choices and decision making and with the transition into adult hood. Our specially designed studio flat style accommodation promotes independence and offers the young people the opportunity to experience independent living whilst being in a supportive and caring environment.
Staff at Wychbury are skilled in person centred planning which put the young person at the centre of their plans, and the key decision maker in all aspects of their life. The team around the young person support the young person to make decisions which keeps them safe and well, whilst ensuring they have a life that makes sense to them.
Our Services Offered
The young people that live at Wychbury House are involved in the decision making in the day to day aspects of their home, developing their goals and aspirations with a supportive team around them. The team work with the Young Person to plan their transition to adulthood. We recognise that the journey through the transitions process is a pathway that leads to more independence and our job is to ensure that we support the young person with practical and emotional support through the changes, as well as develop the Young Person’s independent living skills in preparation for the future.
Some of the areas we work with young people to develop are:
- Person centred planning, goals and reviews and finding out what makes sense to them!
- Independent living skills such as budgeting, cooking, safety awareness
- Awareness of health needs and health promotion
- Planning for the future – education, employment and activities
- Confidence building to ensure the future is positive
- Friends and relationships
- Planning for post school options
- Behavioural management through positive reinforcement and engagement, with clear strategies and involvement with the Young Person
Wychbury prides itself on offering programmes of work and opportunities for accreditation as near as possible to those offered in mainstream schools. All young people will follow an Individual Induction Programme so that an Education Timetable can be identified by the school’s two fully qualified teachers.The pupils are taught in small numbers, often on a 1:1 basis maximising the individual’s potential.
The National Curriculum
Each pupil follows the National Curriculum. After an initial assessment on entering school, a tailor made Individual Education Plan is put in place, following the key subjects of Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Geography, History, IT, Design and Technology, Food Technology and Art. Wychbury also offer a Life Skills programme, supporting each pupil through the transitions period into adulthood. We can offer a Preparation for Working Life qualification, which enables the young people to move on to employment or further education. All pupils attending Wychbury are supported with every day skills, such as independent travel, shopping and awareness of personal hygiene, this increases their confidence and self esteem.
Qualifications and Awards
Wychbury is an accredited centre for OCR, AQA, ASDAN and EDCC.
The school works very closely with the services of Careers South West and South Devon College, ensuring the pupils are gaining the correct qualifications for continuing in Further Education or moving on to their chosen career.
Work Experience
Wychbury utilises the services of Otter Vale Training and Work ways to provide the young people with Work Experience. Many successful placements have included Child Care, local Hotels, Fisherman, Garage Mechanics, a Keeper at Shaldon Zoo, hairdressing and a stable hand.
Gaining work experience ensures the pupils are following the correct career path whilst integrating into the community, widening their social circle and improving their communication skills.

About the Property
Wychbury is a large Victorian house in a residential area on the outskirts of Torquay and blends into the local community without an institutional appearance. It has access to all local amenities. The school is located on the lower ground floor, compromising of three classrooms and an IT suite. Each classroom holds a small numbers of pupils, ensuring a less stressful environment, especially for those pupils who have struggled within main strem education.
