Regard is getting into the London 2012 spirit by launching the Regard Torch Relay, which will see a torch travel hundreds of miles as it visits dozens of its services across England and Wales between May and August.
The aim of the relay is to involve as many of the company’s Service Users and staff as possible in fun-filled events, while also raising funds for selected charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Action for Kids, Penny Brohn Cancer Care, Ty Hafan childrens hospice, Princess Royal Trust for Carers and The Mental Health foundation
in Bristol and the Demelza Kent hospice in Sittingbourne.
Following a day of fundraising activities at the company’s head office in Kingston upon Thames on Friday, 18 May, the torch will be handed to Maarten Vegting, a Locality Manager in Regard’s London Region, to start its England and Wales tour.
It will then travel in week-long stages around Regard’s 13 localities, in the safe hands of the Locality Manager for each area. While in each locality, it will visit as many services as possible, to give the maximum number of Service Users and members of staff the opportunity to be involved. Click here for more details.

Localities are already working on plans for events to raise funds for Regard’s chosen charities, some of them themed to coincide with the Olympics, the Paralympics and other big 2012 occasions, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the UEFA Euro 2012 Football Championships.
Regard’s Operations Director Matthew Neill said: “2012 is a big year across the whole of the UK and there are a number of major events and celebrations happening in which we at Regard would like to play a small part.
“This idea is designed to involve anyone in the company – both Service Users and members of staff – who wishes to take part and allow us to raise funds for a number of charities, while also having fun in the spirit of 2012.
“The torch, which will be accompanied by a comments book into which everyone at the services it visits will be invited to record their thoughts, will start its journey at our head office in Kingston upon Thames and then travel around the country, starting in the South East, through the central area and on to the South West.
“From there it will cross the River Severn into Wales, travelling through the south and west of the country before heading north and into Anglesey, before it passes through the Wirral and across to Manchester. From there, it will travel down through our localities in the east of England before it heads into north London and finally back to Kingston upon Thames for a final celebration and fundraising event. We will be round off the event by making presentations to our nominated charities at a later date.”
