Faerdre


Specialism: Faerdre is a registered residential home for adults with learning disabilities and/or mental health needs which can be complex. The service also provides support to people who present with varying levels of challenging behaviours. Positive behaviour management and total communication strategies are key attributes within the service. Faerdre also provides support to people with autism and Asperger syndrome.

Age Range: 18+

Current Profile of Service: Faerdre has eight beds. Service users have individual rooms with shared use of the ground floor communal lounge, kitchen, dining room, activity room and utility area. The home is set in idyllic rural surroundings and has extensive external grounds.

Hours Provided: There is a Registered Manager at the service and 24-hour support with waking night staff.

Focus of Service: The service has experience of working with adults who have complex needs and high levels of vulnerability, supporting and enabling them to become more independent in their everyday life. Faerdre works with an outcome-focused approach to ensure that Service Users have active ‘live’ support plans and are fully integrated within their local community.

Faerdre is an attractive spacious detached country house near the market town of Llandysul. Faerdre comprises of 8 bedrooms for single occupancy, two of which are located on the ground floor. There is a spacious sitting room, a cosy quiet room, a separate dining room area and a large kitchen.

Due to its agricultural setting, Service Users are afforded the opportunity to care for animals and they currently look after a cat and fish. Service Users are active in their vegetable garden producing potatoes, beans, peas and many other crops.

Faerdre provides a wide ranging, holistic approach to working with adults with learning disabilities:

  • An experienced, well-trained and extremely motivated and enthusiastic team
  • 24 hr support (with waking nights) inc. 1:1 specific support for individual requirements
  • An excellent life-skills training service (responding to individual needs)
  • Support to access full range of activities, courses, skills training events
  • Person centred support planning– all in Total Communication format

These plans encourage and enable individuals to take responsibility for their own personal care, laundry, menu and food production. They ensure that service users contribute to the day to day running of the house, attend house meetings and that they are more accountable for planning their own activities. Service Users supported to attend work placements, “have a voice in the community” and understand the world around them and their part in it.

Hannah Lumby is the registered manager for Faerdre, I came into the team 4 years ago and worked my way up to senior and now acting manager. I have a QCF level 5 in Residential Management, a QCF level 3 in Health and Social Care, an advanced GNVQ in Health and Social Care, PBM, autistic spectrum training, Total Communication and first aid. I’m bilingual, speaking Welsh and English and have lived in the local area for 30 years. I also have other training and a BTEC National Diploma for Performance Art.

Hannah is supported by one full time and one part time Senior Support Worker, both hols Level 3 QCF in Health & Social Care.

To say Sarah Gilbert was looking forward to attending Regard’s House of Lords reception would be something of an understatement. Said acting service manager Hannah Lumby: “She was so excited when she got the invite she was counting off the days on her sticker-chart, willing the time to go quicker.

Faerdre’s busy year with parties and activities

Faerdre have been very busy with various adventures and activities taking place throughout the year; firstly by completing a 5k Ty Hafan Rainbow Run which raised over £365 for charity.
