Current Profile of Service: Newton House is a large seven bedded detached house situated between Newbury and Thatcham. We provide 24 hour support to adults with learning disabilities, in a very relaxed and homely setting. Support is tailored to meet individual needs.

Hours Provided: The are staff on shift throughout the day with one waking night member of staff. Individuals are assessed for 1:1 hours which are based on clear needs and outcomes.

Focus of Service: Support is structured to ensure that people who live there have the opportunity to access a full range of activities within the community e.g. shopping, cinema swimming, college and local clubs. We encourage people to develop their strengths and aim to meet their goals in a safe, supported environment. The service is focussed on enablement and supporting individual choice.

Shared spaces include the large kitchen where staff provide one-to-one support to help residents develop cooking and other daily living skills, the dining room, a conservatory/lounge and a second, smaller lounge. The large garden includes a sensory/activity room, a trampoline, paved areas and a raised sensory garden. Service users are also planning to develop a vegetable patch.

Newbury has shops, pubs and various places to eat, two theatres, a cinema, bowling and swimming facilities. The canal is popular for walks and has a nature trail to explore. Individuals enjoy visiting Hungerford Common, home to ‘The Living Rainforest’ and Hillview Farm, where they access the local education centre.

Each service user has an individual activity plan tailored around their likes and dislikes. In-house activities include independent living skills, cooking sessions, creative arts, sensory sessions and games and puzzles. Other activities available include aromatherapy, music therapy, local walks and picnics, shopping and horse riding.

Newbury College offers taster sessions in cooking, computer studies, theatre/drama, gardening and horticulture. Reading, which is a 30-minute drive away, offers a range of arts and sports activities as well as day activities including those provided by Berkshire Phab. This helps disabled and non-disabled people to socialise and share experiences.

Tracey Parker is the service manager at Newton Housel and has 27 years of experience working with adults with learning disabilities, complex needs and behaviour which can challenge, and has worked in several residential services.Tracey has NVQ Level 4 in Management, the Registered Managers Award and a Level 4 in Care. Tracey has 20 years of experience of managing a service as well as being a Proact-SCIP Instructor. These skills enable her to manage a person centred service for all living at Newton House.

The team of 8 excluding Tracey have around 30 years’ experience between them. The team are a well- established group, all of whom have completed or currently undertaking their NVQ level 2 or 3 in care. Many of the staff have received specialist training in Autism and behaviours which challenge in addition to mandatory training.
