At Cornerleigh, our residential service in Havant, staff and the people they support have been getting creative and have produced their own newsletter.

Debbie Mallet, Senior Support Worker said, “As a service we always strive to ensure those involved in the home are kept informed of what is happening and what we have been doing”. The service looked at ways in which communication could be improved for family and friends of the people they support and decided to create their own newsletter.

Debbie had attended training at the Kingston office and learned about a template for service newsletters. A lot of brainstorming followed, from all of the staff and live at Cornerleigh, before they decided how to design their newsletter.

Emma Joiner, Senior Support Worker, took the lead in planning and creating the newsletter with the people she supports. Emma created a brainstorming board for everyone to write or draw their idea onto, and then created a first draft of their newsletter.

The people supported by the service loved getting involved in creative planning, choosing pictures, and deciding on what should be documented in their newsletter. The process took a while, with everyone changing their minds about what was important to include, and there were many drafts before the completed version.

Gary who lives at the service said, “It’s great, I like my picture and we sent it to my mum and dad” and Elizabeth, who also lives at Cornerleigh added “I liked helping to take the pictures”.

Debbie said, “In the future we are planning to create the newsletter quarterly and have received some positive feedback.”

Emma said “I have thoroughly enjoyed leading and compiling the newsletter with everyone. This has had a very positive effect on involving and engaging the people we support in actively participating in voicing their opinions, wants and wishes”.

A family member of someone who lives at Cornerleigh commented on how much they enjoyed being kept updated with news about the service and seeing the photographs of the activities..

Everyone is looking forward to getting started on the next edition!
