Current Profile of Service: The service provides opportunities for individuals to equip themselves with the skills they need to live the life they choose including moving on to supported living when they are ready. The service encourages and promotes people to gain confidence in their lives, and promotes decision making and choice through a person-centred approach, which is individualised and dependent on the specific needs and communication requirements of each person.

Hours Provided: There is a registered manager, 24-hour staffing, specific 1:1 staffing as required, waking night and sleep-in staff to support individuals across all 4 properties.

Focus of Service: The bespoke support provided, centres on individual need and focuses on developing independence, person-centred life skills, communication, social skills and choice.

Highdowns service is set within a beautiful backdrop which holds panoramic views over St. Ives bay in Cornwall. It is approximately 2 miles from Camborne town centre and transport is available for people to access the local community. All the buildings are situated in beautiful grounds that are linked together so that individuals can access all areas and benefit from the gardens, open fields and a further barn which provides communal recreation opportunities for people who live in all the properties on site.

Everyone living at the Highdowns service is actively involved in decisions relating to the running of their home and personal life and each person has their own person centred plan. People are involved in: Person centered planning, review and awareness, rights and responsibilities and promotion of access to local advocacy, budgeting skills and weekly planning, daily living skills, including meal preparation, cooking and domestic skills, assistance with personal care and encouragement to becoming more independent with self care, choice and support to attend college/events/activities and support to engage in voluntary or part time work, awareness of health promotion, health related conditions and specialist support to access professionals, participation in community events through one to one sessions and planned events with other individuals, the recruitment and selection of the staff that support them, changes to living environment and development of service delivery.

Colin Jull service manager is qualified in NVQ health and social care level 4 and is working towards his level 5. Colin has been at Highdowns since 2005 working as a support worker and then gaining promotion to senior, deputy and now service manager. With the experience of the service and his knowledge and understanding of autism, mental health and managing challenging behaviour he is able to lead an excellent team and service. The team working at Highdowns have years of experience and the majority of the team have worked at Highdowns for many years, which gives great care, knowledge and continuity. The team are trained in many areas of expertise and are able to apply this knowledge within the service.

“Last weekend our son suffered some really nasty epileptic fits. He had not experienced such bad ones before. The staff notified us straight away and we were able to support our son with the staff throughout these anxious hours. We cannot speak highly enough of all the staff. We would also like to thank Jenna Betts who has proved that she is very capable of running the home with great organisational skills and the whole situation ran like an ‘oiled wheel’ and for us, as parents the support couldn’t have been better” Parents with a son at Highdowns
