Clareville Road

Clareville is a registered residential home for adults with autism and learning disabilities who may present additional complex needs. The manager is a Surrey Autism Champion and trained with Surrey Council to achieve this specialism which is passed onto the rest of the staff team.

Current Profile of Service: Clareville is a large house within walking distance to Caterham town centre.

Hours Provided: There is a registered manager at the service and 24-hour support with 2 waking night staff.

Focus of Service: There is an ethos of promoting independence supporting individuals to do as much as they are able to as well as a focus on maximising ability around all daily living tasks such as cleaning, laundry, personal care, travel training, money skills and cooking. Individuals are assisted in positive risk taking so that they actively increase their confidence and move towards their goals in achievable milestones

People were involved in choosing what they ate and were encouraged to assist with meal preparation. People could make their own choices in their care and were supported to be independent. People were treated with care and respect by staff.

Success Stories

Clareville is a 1900s detached house on a residential road in Caterham, Surrey. The service has a large lounge, spacious dining area, kitchen area, shower room, 3 bathrooms, ground floor toilet, a small skills building kitchen on the first floor for 1:1 cookery sessions, a laundry room, large enclosed garden and 10 single bedrooms - 3 are on the first floor.

Caterham has 2 supermarkets, newsagents, a theatre, an adult education centre for people with disabilities, a library, places of worship, clothes shops and a range of cafes, restaurants and pubs. Also the larger towns of Purley, Croydon and Redhill are just a short bus or train ride away where larger shopping malls and more facilities can be accessed.

Support to colleges/day centres and leisure activities provided. Support is structured to ensure each person has the opportunity to access a full range of daytime activities individual to them including the opportunity for employment where possible.

There is an ethos of promoting independence and skilling people up all the time and all individuals are encouraged to do as much as they are able to as well as a focus on maximising ability around all daily living tasks such as cleaning, laundry, personal care, travel training, money skills and cooking. Support around these tasks is closely monitored and adjusted regularly in reflection with changing needs and abilities.

The home has a 7 seater vehicle which individuals can use for longer journeys when public transport cannot be accessed.

Each individual is offered a supported holiday on an annual basis in line with their support package.

Hannah Fleming has 7 years’ experience of running services for adults with learning disabilities and Autism with other complex needs. She has a degree in applied social sciences and a level 5 in management, as well as other social care qualifications. She has excellent knowledge of supporting service users who challenge and putting in place strategies to support them. She is supported by an experienced and confident staff team; many have worked for Regard for over 5 years. The staff receive specialist training in Autism and challenging behaviour as part of their induction and on-going personal development at the service. All staff have received statutory training and the Common Induction Standards as set up by the General Skills Council and specialised training in the following areas; Epilepsy, Autism, Makaton, Challenging Behaviour Theory and Practical Intervention. The manager trained as a Surrey Autism Champion and passes on her skills to all staff at Clareville Road.

Last month, Clareville, our residential service in Caterham threw a picnic as part of ‘Regard’s Big Picnic Fortnight’ to raise money for our chosen charity of the year, YoungMinds.

We were delighted to learn that we have been awarded the prestigious Gold Investors In People standard and decided to celebrate by holding a company-wide ‘Gold Tea Party’ in all of our Regard services on 30th September.
