Specialism: Garthowen is a registered residential home for adults with Learning Disabilities, Dementia and/or Physical Disabilities which can be complex. The service can manage complex epilepsy and communication issues. In addition, palliative and end-of-life care can be delivered with a focus on privacy, dignity and respect for the individual.

Current Profile of Service: Garthowen has eight beds in total, with a number of communal areas within the service and extensive grounds. The interior of the home is fully accessible for those individuals with mobility issues.

Hours Provided: 24-hour support with waking night staff.

Focus of Service: The service provides a specialist service to male and female adults with physical and learning disabilities and associated complex disorders, including dementia,epilepsy, communication difficulties and challenging behaviour. The home works in partnership with health and social care professionals to ensure the service user has access to specialist expertise as required, such as psychiatry, behavioural management and occupational therapy, as part of an outcome-focused approach.

    Success Stories

    Garthowen is an attractive, spacious detached country house situated in its own grounds surrounded by woodlands and fields. The tranquil setting offers a relaxing outdoor space where service users can enjoy the surrounding countryside in the safety of their own garden. The garden has wide paths and the outdoor seating area is easily accessed by wheelchair users.

    The home has eight spacious singly occupied rooms that are situated over two floors and decorated to each service user’s personal preference. There are bathrooms and wet rooms on both floors, with the relevant facilities including specialist shower chairs and bathroom aids. Garthowen is fully equipped for those with physical disability and has aids, hoists and a shaft lift.

    We support people with complex needs to achieve their full potential by utilising the person centred, active support model of care. This enables individuals to retain as much of their independence and dignity as possible.

    The service is staffed 24 hours per day and service users benefit from bespoke Support Plans, Activity Planners and a Monthly Reviewing system second to none in the care industry. Service users’ wishes are at the forefront of every element of our support and our ability to empower individuals to achieve their full potential can be evidenced to commissioners and care co-ordinators alike.

    At Garthowen we are able to support both both male and female adults with physical and learning disabilities and associated complex disorders including dementia, epilepsy, communication difficulties and challenging behaviour. In addition we offer a dignified and appropriate palliative care service should that be required.

    Katie Owen is the Service Manager at Garthowen. She has over 6 years of experience working in the care sector, 4 years supporting people with autism and learning disabilities. Katie holds NVQ level 3 in health and social care and QCF level 5 in management.

    The team at Garthowen have varied experience, which enhances the team as a whole. All staff are competent and fully trained in supporting adults with both physical and mental needs. There is a lift available to support adults unable to use the stairs.Those staff not yet qualified, are keen to gain their level 2 and 3 in H & S Care.

    Regard team are through to the Wales Care Awards Finals 2018

    We are pleased to announce that two team members from the Welsh region got through to the finals of the Wales Care Awards, with another team member going through to the judging stage. The Award finals took place on 19 October 2018.

    We were delighted to learn that we have been awarded the prestigious Gold Investors In People standard and decided to celebrate by holding a company-wide ‘Gold Tea Party’ in all of our Regard services on 30th September.
